A novel chess-like strategy game

What do you think of this game? * as in chess, each player gets 16 pieces placed in the same two rows on each side on an 8x8 board * every piece starts out with a "1" on it * you can think of each "1" piece as a king; once you lose all of your "1" pieces, you lose * on each turn, you may either move a piece or increase the number on one of your pieces (provided you would still have at least one "1" piece left) * a piece with a number k may move up to k steps horizontally or vertically or any combination thereof; every step taken must be on a free square except for the destination, which may contain an opponent piece to be captured In terms of a user interface, I could highlight all pieces under threat and also show you all places to which you can move a piece.

Good idea. To easily solved though. Everyone would keep adding ones. How about instead of moving 1 extra square for each 1, in the endgame, if there are only one piece on either side, 1's are counted as extra points.

| But your opponent could move pieces to strategic positions or initiate an attack while you are adding ones.

Which is where strategy comes in. To move or to add ones? Maybe a force capture rule could be added as a variant, or as the original where without it is the variant.

I have played a game with these modified rules and was quite pleased with how it went. Still, I would be interested to see if you can find potential flaws in the game play. * as in chess, each player gets 16 pieces placed in the same two rows on each side on an 8x8 board * every piece starts out with a "1" on it; CHANGED: 1 pieces cannot capture any other piece * you can think of each "1" piece as a king; once you lose all of your "1" pieces, you lose * on each turn, you may either move a piece or increase the number on one of your pieces (provided you would still have at least one "1" piece left) * CHANGED: a piece with a number k may move up to k steps either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally (it suffices to have k <= 7); every step taken must be on a free square except for the destination if k >=2, which may contain an opponent piece to be captured I plan to build a Facebook app and/or web site for this soon!

Better, but then adding ones would be constant. How about: 16 kings, each with a one, you may move a one from one piece to an adjacent(diagonal included) piece. Capture is compulsory. 1's still left at the end are counted as extra points.
