How you got your nick?

Myself, NC are my initials in real life. BNC was a name I used at early teen years, when I made the "hall of fame" in the video games of the time that allowed only 3 characters to be enetered. I founf it amusing that BNC (the coaxial cable connector) and my initials were similar.

Boring...

But I'm sure you have better stories. So, what are they?

Jinbotak literally means "Bald Genie". Since my teenage years, I find combing my hair too much of a hassle, and usually shave my head to make it bald. ( I still do it now, albeit not so often ). I couldn't remember who started calling me that nick though, but it stuck, at least in the cyber world.

I guess mine is just as boring as BNC's  Wink , let's hear it from the others..

The idea came from the programming language Rebol.  It sounds like red ball.  I tried another color and came up with Grimbal.  It sounded good as a nick.  It could have been worse, like Blubble.

Silly isn't it?

My story's similar to BNC: my real-life initials are S.A.M.  Not wanting to be known as Sam on every three-letter high-score list, I needed a change.  I like Q -- I don't think it's used enough. Smiley  SQM just didn't have the right "ring" to it, so SMQ it was.  These days I joke that the Q stands for "esquire". Wink

I picked "grey" as a usename within a week or two of becoming active online for the first time (and, yes, Babylon 5 had been running for some years by then, but that's not the whole of the meaning)

Come the time I tried getting my first major identity rather than local ones on minor forums, rmsgrey (tacking my initials on the front) was the first variation I tried that wasn't already taken.

So far, occasional Googling on "rmsgrey" hasn't turned up anyone else using it either.

Aryabhatta was an Indian mathematician, some literature credits him with the discovery of zero (this is a disputed topic, though).

He has also made some important contributions to 'ancient' indian mathematics.

When I registered, I had been reading about him...

Yea, boring...

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but in case you missed it...

My name is Colin (Col for short) and I am a school teacher (*). And the real clincher is the fact that I was born on pi day and I teach mathematics: circle <-> Sir Col.

* In England, if a student does not know the surname of a male teacher they will address them, "Sir". Similarly female teachers, for whom their surname is not known, are addressed as "Miss", regardless of their marital status.

I had chosen Daedalus as a user-name on a tech forum to which I had posted a question, simply because I thought he was an early example of a tech nerd. When I started here, I decided to switch from the intelligent father to the idiot son.

I mean really, the wings are wax - it shouldn't take a genius to figure out that getting them hot is a bad idea...

Back in the days of Daedalus and Icarus the atmosphere must have gone almost to the sun for him to fly so close to it. Daedalus had the right idea with his feather and wax design: nowadays all the big plane manfuacturers are using a fiberous material bound together by a polymer matrix, but maybe there is an important lesson there. There is a good statue of Icarus in the lobby of the aircraft museum in Dayton Ohio.

My nickname is just my initials, although somebody reading too many singles ads thought it meant something else.
