more dynamic social news?

I will assume familiarity with digg and reddit. I wonder what would happen in this scheme: * the front page shows links ranked by score (i.e., like reddit's "top") * a submitted link starts out with the highest score in the system and so appears at the top of this ranking * people can vote on links up or down just as in reddit * uninteresting submissions will quickly descend down the ranking on the front page (and so not too many people would even see them on the front page) * more people would see new link submissions than on reddit/digg thus giving them a better chance to "float" if they are good * hot items will remain near the top until people get tired of them, at which point they can change their vote from up to down I'm assuming here that the submission rate is not too fast, otherwise, much of the front page would just show new items. I guess this system could adjust the rate at which new items appear on the front page automatically for best results. It may not be obvious why people would vote in the first place. I suppose that the desire to see more discussion on a link submission would be an incentive for wanting that link to stay on the front page for a while. And so there is an incentive to vote it up. When the discussion starts to get boring, then there is an incentive to vote that link down off the front page.

| Always a shame when failed assumptions doom the rest of a post.. Really, I haven't a clue about either of those.

| The general idea is to have users submit links and vote on what constitutes important news. The incentive for voting could be to train a personalized news filter and/or to make certain news stories more prominent so that more discussion occurs on them.
