The problem is this: given any two points on earth, how would you travel from one point to another by train in 42 minutes? The fact that the trip always takes 42 minutes no matter where you start and end up is a big clue here.

It also has the virtue of using the least amount of track between two points. Will the rotation of the earth cause some problems? (Imagine the journey between two points on the Equator, 90deg W and 90deg E).

Funnily enough, the news here (UK) is talking about very fast mag-lev trains (London to Edinburgh in 2 hours). You could position the magnets all round the tunnel walls, pump the air out and drop a capsule full of (brave) passengers into the hole / tunnel.
