baseball distance

hi

for baseball fans...

its been a while since i posted last but finally i have something intresting i think...

a lot of very smart people here with some advanced degrees in various science fields so maybe they find this interesting

can we use mathematics to write a formula to predict the distance the ball will travel if we know all of the variables?

lets define some for now...

distance between pitcher and batter is 60 1/2 ft
lets say for the sake of even numbers(for now later be replaced by variable) that pitcher throws baseball at constant speed of 100mph

on average it takes .4-.5 sec for batter to recognize what pitch is thrown and start his swing
lets use .5 for even number sake...

so the question is...if you know the distance from plate and speed at what ball is thrown and we know the speed of the bat(it can be measured but on average 90-100 mph) can we write a formula to predict the distance?

to make it easier for now lets use a indoor stadium with constant humidity/temperature/no wind

we still need to somehow define the way the batter hits the ball to predict the tragectory(high fly/ground ball/etc)

assuming if you have the video angles from the front/sides perhaps we can predict the angle of lift off(i guess on average its about 45 degress)
we still need to take in mind what part of the bat the ball hit(the fattest part or closer to handle) and what kind of swing the batter has(upper cut, line drive etc)

for example... i need 1 hitter swing as hard/fast as i ever seen him but because tragectory was low the ball only went about 320 fit(it was never more than 100ft above the field aprox)

other time he swung a lot slower(least i thought so) and ball went 520 ft...i guess the ball was like 250ft in the air at the highest point

assuming we can determine all this... can we write a formula to measure?

thanx a lotSmiley

p.s i wont be able to reply for a while, so dont think i'm ignoring thisSmiley

there maybe more variables but i think i covered most and we can leave rest for now...
