If I were playing this game with you in front of me with real dice, are you lining up the dice in order from left to right, or just tossing them into a bowl and looking at the 5 dice results in no particular order?

I can tell you 3 things (did you read the sectio9n about Bill Gates?). However I can hide from you that the answer to your question is :: no, the order does not change the result. ::. And the name of the game is important.

Yeah, I figured it out last night, after I posted the question. Before reading any hints, other than the "official hints", I first ran the game 100 times to get an idea of the distribution of the possible scores. I'm sure you know how far that got me. This is one of those games where it is so tempting to do a net search for the answer, but you know that if you do, you'll never have the satisfaction of finally figuring it out.

Unfortunately, their Javascript is bad and does not work in Mozilla, so a quick glance at the source of the problem ruined the puzzle. And what is a weird idea of displaying the die values on the "side" face? I've read the article about Bill Gates thinking that the trick is to look at the upper face and this was definitely not helpful.

Actually, I solved it as a mathematical puzzle. I thought it would be some complicated relationship between the number of 1's (a), 2's (b), 3's (c), and so on. Such that score, S = Ua+Vb+Wc+Xd+Ye+Zf. I set up a grid and recorded the results. E.g. S a b c d e f 6 0 2 1 1 1 0 4 0 0 2 1 0 2 6 0 1 1 0 1 2 You can imagine how quickly this solves! The sad part is that it took me longer to work out the connection with the name of game and the "trick".

I don't recall having figured it out when this thread was first started. But I had forgotten about it until now. This time I had the answer before I even rolled once. Possibly because a similar puzzle (rabbits around the hole) was posted elsewhere here a month or two ago, and I solved that one.

This has got me addicted. But I still haven't solved it. I had 3 correct answers, but after each of them I forgot how I got the answer. I'm not giving up.

Yay! I've got it. When you realize how simple it is, you think you're stupid for not getting it before.

The answer to Petals around the rose is 3 counts as 2 petals and 5 counts as 4 petals. The rest counts as 0, STOP WASTING YOUR TIME

It amazes me when someone says something like that in a defunct thread, as if people were still debating what the solution was. And now that you've figured it out yourself, ken, do you know why 3 counts as 2 petals and 5 counts as 4 petals, while the others are zero?

i went to this web site where they have a sort of simulation of petals around the rose i did it for 20 minutes and didnt get it then i see kens message (thx for messing up the game for me) and now i get the right answer but have no idea why. can someone tell me why 5 is 4 petals and 3 is 2 petals. there is no reason to be able to do something if you dont understand it. by the way the web site with simulation is http://crux.baker.edu/cdavis09/roses.html

I made it in notepad first (and checking it every now and then in preview). You wouldn't believe how long it took before the formatting didn't look like crap. Making the ascii-art in notepad is straightforward enough. So is adding the colours. But actually getting this board to show text preformatted is nearly impossible. Hence the amount code in the message
