Oh of course, thanks for the reminder. In general, + is an operator but not the usual addition operator. It is easy to solve the problem but I suppose that the precise math picture would be based on that itself. I think the algebraists would say that + is an abstract operator.

I like the convention where they put a circle around the plus (and other operators) when they aren't the usual ones.
