Autologic words... words that are what they are. For example, "English" is autologic; "French" is not. "Word" is. "Dog" is not. "Written" is (in this instance); "Said" is not (in this instance). You get the picture. We had a thread about them a while ago, I thought it about time to try someting along the same lines. What about these though...? "sequaepedalian" "obfuscatory" "defined" "translated" "a random collection of letters" "sorted" "inconceivable" "polyglottic" "neologism" "ciphered"

Autologic (but you could argue that it is not...)

um, yes. sesqui, not se(s)quae... bad typing. Sorry. I understood the definintion to be "using excessively long words when shorter ones would do", but the definitions given by dictionary.com make it wriggly enough. I've tried to get words which you almost need to justify your stance.

I don't think "a random collection of letters" is one. They aren't really random because they have a particular order so that they are comprehensible. Maybe something more along the lines of "an ordered collection of letters".

sorry- fell asleep there... on Mar 5th, 2009, 7:31pm, codpro880 wrote:I don't think "a random collection of letters" is one. They aren't really random because they have a particular order so that they are comprehensible. Maybe something more along the lines of "an ordered collection of letters". |
| But it depends, surely. What if the letters are rearranged to spell "For littler acetone condoms". The letters are the same, ye tthe meaning is entirely different. Given a random generation of letters, it's concievable that this string was evolved. The fact that we can make sense of it is 2ndry?

Well, technically you should speak of "a randomly generated collection of letters"
