50-link chain

I need a closed chain that is composed of 50 links (that is, the "last" link is connected to the "first"). I have two options: 1. I can buy that chain for $25 2. I can use some old small chains I found: 1 3-link chain, 1 four-link, 2 five-link, 3 six-link, 1 seven-link and 1 eight-link. These parts are free, but there is a catch. In order to put them together I have to go to a chain-master, and she chrges $1 to open a link, and $2 to close a link. What is the most economical solution?

I can get it done for $21. I suspect I may have met the problem before at some point, so I won't detail my solution just yet.

| No no.. I meant saving $6 on the $27 you'd expect to pay when using your own 9 chains..

Bummer! At present, I can only get the cost down to $24, which may or may not be more economical depending on the contiplated use of the chain and the difference in effective ages between the new chain and the older ones.

| If you've got it down to $24, then you've already made the biggest conceptual leap - saving the further $3 just takes a little variation. Unless, of course, you'vecome up with a totally different solution, in which case I'd be very interested to find out what it is.

While puzzling over this problem I went for a walk and passed a man on the street hawking t-shirts emblazoned with "Eagles Win Super Bowl". The man was shouting "two for one, two for one" and suddenly my original total of $24 didn't seem right. New total - $21
