In the position below with White to move, he successfully wagers that he will finish the game within two moves (each). What was his next move?

Did he perhaps "finish" the game by reaching a tie?

I can finish it in one move total - White resigns... I suspect that's not the intended answer though My guess would be that he finishes by ::losing to checkmate:: [e]Silly me... he finishes by ::stalemate:: Specifically ::Kxg3, e1(forced), Qxe1 Stalemate::[/e]

My chess knowledge is not what it should be, but... Can the King go to G3? That would intentionally put the King directly into check from the pawn at H2. According to the rules by which I have always played, this is not allowed. I believe, were I white, I could get a Mate in 3. EverGreenA3

Quote: rmsgrey, 1. Kxg3 is answered by 1.....dxf1 = N+, with no end in sight. Even 1....dxf1 = Q wins the wager. 1. Kxg3 dxf1 = Q 2. Qe3+ Qf2 3. Qxf2 mate BNC, you have the right idea but the clock is ticking.

| The White king can go to g3 because the pawn on h2 is moving down the board. Mate in 3 would lose the wager.

How about this? :: Bishop to g2 King takes Bishop Queen takes Rook King takes Queen. White can't move - stalemate. :: Guess that's one is not guaranteed though.....

I'm guessing you mean Qc5+ or Qe3+ for your first move...

How about queen to e1, black must move the g3 pawn to g2, then pawn to f2, checkmate.

| You have the white pawn moving backwards from f3 to f2.
