Entertaining 'puzzle challenge' site
« on: Mar 18th, 2004, 2:02pm »

Yesterday I stumbled across a sort of 'puzzle trail' site at http://cnfsn.tripod.com which I thought was quite well done. The author's a bit too fond of rebusses (rebi?) for my taste but I recommend it if you've got a free half-hour and nothing to put in it.

I'm not affiliated with the site in any way, incidentally; just thought that it might be of interest to some of you. And if anyone can answer the Fire 5 question I might be able to get some sleep...

Hint for Fire #5: 'Surely all people / Deserving of Fire' refers to you.
Bigger hint: Go back and read all your previous answers.

OK, I'm stuck on Metal #8 and Fire #4, can I get a little help, pretty please?

Nevermind!

P.S. To those wondering how you access fire without solving metal, check out the source code for the number-pad code entering thingy. Wink

I had a look at the source code, but you can't sneak past it. The Javascript checks that the product of digits in the <code> you enter is 5643509760 and you also entered a 15-digit number. If your <code> passes these two tests it then forwards you to the page: <code>.htm. It's easy to find a 15-digit number for which the product is 5643509760, but you're not going to guess the actual digits nor the correct combination in a hurry (any combination of the correct digits would pass the test, but there are 1307674368000 ways you can arrange a 15-digit number). Of course, if you've got four of the five codes, you can probably guess the remaining 3 digits and there are only 6 combinations to try.

Trying the honest approach... I suck! I'm completely useless at those rebus things. I can't even work out the first level:
AIRAIRAIRAIRAIRAIR

Any hints?

Thanks Eigenray! And death to all self-referential-quiz-setters...

I'm not generally too fond of rebussesses either, though I found that once I'd ground my way through the first half-dozen my brain started working in the right direction. A few of them are actually quite 'elegant' in a tooth-grinding sort of way.

The important thing seems to be getting into the right mind-set. You often need to just say what you see, and take into account the relative positions of all the symbols.

In this particular case you've got an X and some Qs.

Huh
I'm stumped.  Only thing that comes to mind is 'execute', or 'mind your p's and q's' which doesn't work because it needs to be one word.

I'm stuck on the "corona" animalgram as well.  I guess I was dropped on my head when I was young.  Sad

Well, when I couldn't solve one of the animalgrams, I just typed "anagram" into google, and had the answer shortly Tongue

Did anyone get through them all without cheating at least once? I'd wager I cheated about 10 times, maybe 15. Though that may be a bit conservative Smiley

So far I haven't really "cheated", but I'm stuck on leaf 4 and sand 6(so far), and I'm through crystal.  I'm clueless on XQQQ even with the clues I've been given.  Does getting hints count as cheating?

Any ideas?

[e]never mind. A minute after I figured it wasn't ::skin::[/e]

[e2]
OK, now I am stuck on metal #8 rebus:

I'm currently stuck on water 7 and metal 8

water 7:
Quote:
Two sisters are we, one dark and one fair.
In twin towers we're dwelling, we're quite the pair.
One from the land, and one from the sea.
The fairer sister, who is she?

metal 8 as above - I don't know if it helps at all, but in some card games, the top 5 cards in each suit are known as honors.

[e]it doesn't[/e]

amUous

Your hint: It's not a small U

I was thinking the word's supposed to be amorous, so the answer would be "U/you instead of or" or something similar.  Of course it could be amphibious as well.  What are you hinting at?  "Capital U", "Big U", "A large ewe is in amphibious istead of Phoebe (phibi)"?
 Huh

Cathos,

One of your guesses is correct. Try reading the word with each...

PS: I think I (finally) got metal #8. The site seems down at the moment, I'll try it later. 10x guys.

One of my guesses was correct?!

That confuses me worse than before.  Was it 'ewe' that was correct?  I hate these rebuses
