In this standard chess puzzle it is White to play and win.

| 1. That White piece is a king, not a queen. 2. That White pawn is moving up the board. 3. With what?

The puzzle is not being posed as though it were 'original'. Would you rather I give the author's name so that everybody can Google the solution?

| I 'd like you to give the author's name when you post the solution ( which, in this case, is rather complex), but i fail to see why you mirrored the original position. Never mind, it's a classic and you were right to post it. Open hint: black is happy to trade his rook for the pawn, so white has to find a way to prevent that. But when he seems to have pulled it off, black has a clever counterblow...

| In fact, mirrored is how I first saw the puzzle and therefore how I remember it. Quote:I 'd like you to give the author's name when you post the solution |
| When somebody gets the solution I will not only give the author's name but also the story of how he did it. (You are not related, are you?)

Nice puzzle! I'm not sure if I've thought of everything but here goes: 1. f7 Black has to stop the queening, but can't threaten the pawn directly, so is forced to check the king. His only other option is to come down the board and then try for a perpetual check along the h and g files (if white king moves onto f black can skewer the king) but this is defeated by the fact that white can zigzag down g and h and finally move onto f3 after which black can no longer check the king. If Black's king was on g1 instead of h1 I think this would work! But it doesn't so: 1 f7 Re6+ White has to stop black from threatening the pawn by coming onto the f file which means either moving onto the f file or staying on the g. If the king moves to g7 then the rook can pin the pawn with Re7 and take the pawn next move. A move onto the f file by the white king is also bad because Re1 threatens to skewer the promoted queen next move (if white doesn't promote then black still plays Rf1 and takes the pawn/queen either way) so the only move white has is: 2 Kg5 Re5+ 3 Kg4 Re4+ 4 Kg3 Re3+ 5 Kf2 Now black can't make a safe check and can't move somewhere where he can skewer the queen safely after the promotion. White should win kith a King and Queen vs a King and Rook

1 - I assume you mean Rf4+ 2 - Dammit! All is not lost though I think, but this does make the problem even nicer! If 5 ... Re4 then 6 f8=R Now, Rf4+ is obviously a loosing move and white is threatening Rh8+ then mate. So 5 Kf2 Re4 (anything else and white can queen next move) 6 f8=R Rh4 7 Kg3 Now white threatens mate with Rg1++ and is also treatening blacks unprotected rook. With no way to counteract both threats black is either mated or loses his rook. A loss either way. Nice twist! Surely black has run out of tricks now.

Yes, unkwoop. That's it. In fact, from the starting position it is mate in 26. (Black plays the boring 3...Kg2) Anyway, it's quite a famous puzzle. See http://www.chessbase.com/puzzle/christmas2003/chr03-6a.htm Quote:White should win kith a King and Queen vs a King and Rook |
| Actually, winning with K + Q vs. K + R within 50 moves is not that easy against perfect play.
