In a way, every one of these numbers has a characteristic that the others don't have. Is this a guess-what-the-one-who-asks-is-intending game?

Plus it's the only one with two consecutive digits being the same.

There is another characteristic; we are not just thinking numbers but letters too.

As one BBer to another, who apparently has been better able to avoid some of the more annoying aspects of younger generational cultures, "1337" - pronounced "elite" I've been told - is a computer writing fad that involves using numbers and other symbols in place of letters that they vaguely resemble, to spell words in a very "stylized" phonetic fashion. In the word "1337", the 1 stands for L, which is pronounce with its name "el", 3 stands for E and 7 for T, so 1337 is L - EET. Some more advanced 1337 is available in the comic to which William linked. (Needless to say, while a little 1337 is okay, a lot of it is very tiresome to wade through.) (It's been awhile since I last read Megatokyo. I stopped reading some time back because the authors were posting only sporadically at best. I'm glad to see they are still at it though - their's was one of the better strips out there. I've seen the "Does anyone here speak L33T" strip before, but the Junpei ones are new to me. I may have to go look it again. Another good source for 1337 is "Funny Farm", one of whose characters is a robot who speaks nothing else.) Then there is this exchange from "GPF" (intermixed with other plotlines) wherein Fooker, one of the main characters, does battle with a 1337 hacker. As an added puzzle, who can translate it? (At this point, as narrative convention demands, Fooker defeats the hacker.) For 1337, those are fairly easy.

Admittedly, I think of it as "leet" as well, but some sites I've read have claimed it is pronounced "elite", and you are first person I've seen to say otherwise. Since no one I know offline has ever even mentioned the subject, the question of how to pronouce it has always been moot for me. There is a mistake in your first translation. All the others are right on. Hint: What makes this 1337 version fairly easy is that it uses a fixed substitution for actual english letters. That is, if a letter is represented by a set of symbols in one place, it is represented by the same symbols everywhere. Once you figure the letter represented, you can translate this straight to the source text. And, unlike most 1337, the source is perfect english, with no mispellings or added letters. I.e., this hacker would never say "r0x0rs". Quote:(this a a damned annoying dialect of leet, they use the same character for several letters) |
| I believe there is only one symbol that is used to represent more than one letter. It represents two.

Get used to 1337, and you may use this version instead of the ol' boring google.

Maryl's clue says letters are also involved: 38: The only one forming a word, 'BE' when looked at upsidedown on a calculator. 54: The only one when spelled out which does not have the letter E. Also no I in the last word. 626:The only one without two vowels in a row when spelled out. 1009: The only one without a Y when spelled out. 2376: The only one with a V in its name. 3129: The only one with three words in its name ending in same letter.

| I'm not sure that the answer could be this simple, but I think Julius Caesar or Marcus Aurelius would know the answer. 1009 is the only combination listed that forms a word. (Although 54 is the first name of a famous actress).
