Safe combination

You are to open a safe without knowing the combination. Beginning with the dial set at
zero, the dial must be turned counter-clockwise to the first combination number, (then
clockwise back to zero), and clockwise to the second combination number, (then
counter-clockwise back to zero), and counter-clockwise again to the third and final
number, where upon the door shall immediately spring open. There are 40 numbers on
    the dial, including the zero.

Without knowing the combination numbers, what is the maximum number of trials
required to open the safe (one trial equals one attempt to dial a full three-number
     combination)?

Two questions:

1. Is zero a valid combination number?
2. Upon failure, must the dial be turned back to zero before another attemp is made?

I count the number of turns required to be 1600.  This includes 0,0,0 as a combination.  My guess is low because the last digit is irelevant.  If the safe pops open when you reach the last number, then on the last number, just go past each number, and when you have the first 2 numbers of the combination right, the last one should immediately open the safe.  I would suggest starting with 0,0,x and then 1,0,x followed by 2,0,x...  Is 1600 correct?

Yup, that cracks it Nick. Could you hide your answer though, by inserting the word hide in square brackets before the answer, and /hide in the same brackets after -without any spaces between the brackets.

Nick's a guest, so he can't edit his post. You'd have to ask William.
