This is very simple but it might still trip most people up, including myself UGH! No more drugs for me. If you were running a race, and you passed the person in 2nd place, what place would you be in now?

Second, 'cause the guy in first is still in first and the guy you just passed is now third.

OK, Now, on another race, you passed the person on the last place. Where are you now?

Could be anything from second last to first.. You can't be last because you can't pass yourself. But you can overtake anyone else if you gain a lap.. If you're the first person to pass the one in last place then you're in first place..

If it's a lap race, and if "passing" simply means that you run by someone, regardless of whether or not you were already a lap ahead of or behind them, then you could be in any place from last to first after passing anyone. Well, except for the special case mentioned in another post that if you've just passed the person who was in last place, you can't now be in last place (otherwise you would have been in last place before, a contradiction). However, if by "passing" you only mean running by someone who is on the same lap as you, so that you take on their place, then obviously just after passing the person in second place, you take over their place and are in second.
