How do we use cognitive dissonance to brainwash ?

There's an interesting study here.......if people's actions are inconsistent with their beliefs or attitudes, they will feel the tension and we call that tension as dissonance. Right now, take an example, suppose if I want to make a friend of mine who doesn't smoke to turn into a smoker, how should I go about it?? How can I use cognitive dissonance to persuade him to smoke? Hmm........

Convince him that all cool people smoke, then convince he is cool. If he thinks he's cool, but doesn't smoke, but also think all cool people smoke, there's dissonance there. To resolve that conflict he'll either have to start smoking or accept he's not cool, and everyone wants to be cool (except the really cool people). An easier (non-psychological) way would be to feed him nicotine-gum, and then let him go in withdrawl a few days, then offer a cigarette (on a dare if that's what it takes, people will do stupid things on dares).. You could also not try to get people hooked on cigarettes, it's better for your health as well.. And you want to be healthy don't you?

That's why it's great to be dualistic.. no problems with cognitive dissonance. And you get to be inconsistant.. Drives people crazy

| Ditto. In answer to the original question, I would suggest seduction, temptation-a long, drawn out process of subtle hints or continued exposure which tends to play on someone's psyche and causes them to try something they normally wouldn't. I'm not saying this a good thing but it does work. Either that or a bottle of strong booze would work.

| I agree. These are the sort of things that Cults do to bring people into their fold - the others are making sure that they target someone when they are at their weakest (emotionally, mentally) and discrediting the people that their mark holds dear.

Introduce him to marijuana, then he'll think he's cool, you'll get his foot in the door, and he'll realize that he was retarted before.

I deleted my original post here. Please accept my apology for its content as it was in poor taste and I offer this version in its place. As Killa said in the previous post: "...he'll realize that he was retarted before." The Bee Bell Bakery had an incredible return policy. If you damaged your baked goods, they would replace them with no questions asked. A professor bought some of these fine baked goods and started driving home. The goods slid off of the passenger's seat and onto the floor where they were ruined. He threw them out and went back to the bakery and got them replaced with no problems. Since the professor was a blatant stereotype and was absent-minded, he ended up driving around the block and stopped at the Bee Bell Bakery again. He went in and got a replacement order for his baked goods that had fallen onto the floor of his car. A bakery worker smiled at the eccentric fellow as he was leaving and said to his co-worker "he'll realize that he was retarted before."

| I wouldn't of worried about it in a set of forums that also contains the "two condoms & three women" puzzle. I am probably one of the most prudish people regularly involved in these forums and I didn't find it offensive.

The problem with Cognitive Dissonance is that you have to get the person to initiate the behaviour that dosent match them. From my position of psychgological ignorance, then dont all the clever psycholgogists have to resort back to basic salesman tricks? This topic is sooo intriguing. Oh and Freud i think got alot of things right but i think like most psychological models there is some truth in it for it to have existed for this long. I certainly dont believe we can be as primal as Freud suggests.
