skip pewter gym
This trick works on Pokémon red and blue, but does not work on yellow.
Press start to pull up the menu and move the cursor to the SAVE option, then press B to exit the menu.
Walk east of Pewter to get the boy to talk to you.
Once he says "Follow me!", press B to exit the dialogue and immediately press the start button.
Save your game. If you decide to keep watching after the game is saved, an interesting effect is that your character will walk to the gym alone.
Restart the game and continue where you left off.
The boy will disappear, walk in from the left, then begin his dialogue again.
He will still insist on taking you to the gym, but will walk there in a funny way
Go back to the east gate of Pewter City, and walk directly across the top spot where the boy used to be standing. |
Note: Applicable to speedrunning, others have discovered how to pull this off without having to save and restart the GameBoy. This still involves pressing the START button at the proper time, while making sure to walk across the bottommost path.
If you decide to keep playing and intend to make it all the way to the Elite Four, you won't necessarily have to go back and get the Boulderbadge. To fully understand this, you can read more about the walk through walls glitch to be used later in the game.
There are as of yet no other known practical consequences of this trick, but much later in the game it does enable some interesting glitches that can crash the game or create other funny situations. Screenshots and a video of one such glitch are shown below.
