Club History
We are a student-organization at the University of California, Berkeley. The club, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu @ Berkeley, was started in Fall 2013 by Timur Bazhirov, Christian Lavados, and Denney Choi. Historically, the club used to meet and roll in Hearst Gym, before finding a home more recently in the Strawberry Canyon Recreational Facility, behind Memorial Stadium.

BJJ
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art, with roots in Japanese Jujutsu and Judo. The ground techniques were refined by the Gracie family, who made their art world famous after the very first UFC event, where Royce Gracie defeated much larger opponents of different disciplines by using joint-locks and submission-holds instead of strikes. BJJ has since evolved into the fastest growing sport in the world as an effective form of exercise, Mixed Martial Arts core discipline, and self-defense.
