INDOCHINA RESOURCES
Note: I originally prepared this web page while working for the
Indochina Center of the University of California at Berkeley. I left the
job in March 2002 due to its difficult funding situation, and now work
full time at the main library of U.C. Berkeley. Below is a description of
the Indochina Center holdings. - Stephen Denney
The Indochina Center of the University of California, Berkeley,
contains one of the largest collections in the world of
English-language materials on Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The
heart of the collection comprises approximately 225 file cabinet
drawers (525 linear feet) of government documents, press
clippings, and private papers stored in vertical files and
organized by subject.
The collection was founded and developed by Douglas Pike from the time
he was a U.S. Foreign Service officer in Vietnam, and continued to develop
under his direction after he came to Berkeley in 1981 until 1997 when he
moved to the Vietnam Center at Texas Tech University, as the university
here could no longer support the collection and his work as head of the
UCB Indochina Studies Project. At the time, Mr. Pike had intended to take
all the files with him to Texas Tech, but was prevented from doing so by
the university here. So he left behind about half of the files, dealing
with post-1975 conditions in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, along with many
files on North and South Vietnam during the war, and microfiche of most of
the Vietnam war files which went to Texas Tech.
Mr. Pike passed away on May 13, 2002 and his presence will be deeply
missed. Click here for a
tribute to him by the TTU Vietnam Center. The TTU Vietnam Center has
placed many of his donated files online at its virtual archive (see links
below).
The Indochina Center also includes a recently expanded collection of
contemporary serials from Vietnam, now the largest collection in the San
Francisco Bay Area, and about three file cabinets of
materials from the former Indochina Resource/Southeast Asia Resource
Center, a major antiwar research organization from the 1970s and 1980s.
The Indochina Center is now under the Center for Southeast Asia
Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Use of the
collection is free and open to the public. However, because it is
presently closed, one must contact the Center for Southeast Asia Studies
in order to use the facility.
