Once upon a time I really did not enjoy
grad school. I applied to the Peace Corps and had a tentative
assignment to teach math in Sub-Saharan Africa starting October 6,
2006. I told this to the professor I've worked for for a couple
years, and he basically said, "How about I send you to Africa
instead?"
So I went. I lived in Busia, Kenya for six months starting in
September 2006. I climbed Kilimanjaro (in just over 24 hours),
ran the Nairobi marathon, went to the World Social Forum, rafted on the
Nile, swam in the Indian Ocean, met wonderful people, and did really
interesting and worthwhile research. Here are my favorite 99
